NUECES COUNTY, TEXAS (News Release) - The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a current text message scam with messages claiming to be TxDot or the Department of Motor Vehicles. The most recent phone number used for this scam was 540-325-8648. Here are a few clues that this is a scam:

Here are some clues of this scam:

- Area Code 540 is from Virginia

- TxDot is Texas Department of Transportation

- TxDMV is Texas Department of Motor Vehicle

- Those are two different State Agencies, but the text acts as if they are the same

- TxDOT/TxDMV does not send out mass texts for outstanding tickets. Any outstanding traffic citations rest with the municipal courts or justice of the peace courts.
