Nueces County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Renewed Phone Scam

Nueces County Sheriff’s Office

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a renewed phone scam in which callers impersonate sheriff’s deputies and staff to demand money or personal information.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers often use the real names of detectives or deputies and spoof phone numbers to appear as though the calls are coming from the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials emphasized that the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand payment related to an incarcerated family member, including fees for GPS monitoring or bail. The agency also does not accept payments through mobile apps such as Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle, nor does it use cryptocurrency such as bitcoin.

All bail transactions are conducted in person, never over the phone, the sheriff’s office said. In addition, GPS monitoring is managed by probation departments and the courts — not the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities added that sheriff’s staff will not threaten individuals with jail time or demand payment over the phone for missed jury duty.

Residents who receive calls claiming to be from the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office and requesting money or personal information are advised to hang up immediately.

Suspected scam calls can be reported through the Nueces County Sheriff’s App under the NCSO Tips/Reports tab.
