Mosquitos Tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus in Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (News Release) - The City of Kingsville Health Department Animal Control & Care Center received notification of mosquitos that tested positive for St Louis Encephalitis Virus from the Texas Department of State Health Services lab. The mosquitos were trapped July 28, 2026 in the 700 block of E Lott and 900 block of E Shelton.

Saint Louis encephalitis is a disease caused by the mosquito-borne Saint Louis encephalitis virus. The majority of infections do not result in disease or cause mild illness, including fever and headache. In more severe cases, symptoms may include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, occasional convulsions and spastic paralysis.

Crews will begin spraying the affected areas.

Tips for mosquito safety: Wear long sleeves and long pants if you're outdoors at dawn or dusk, use a mosquito repellant that contains DEET, check your property for any standing water, and keep your lawn maintained to help curb mosquito breeding.
