RIVIERA, TEXAS – Riviera Independent School District and the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office addressed the community Tuesday after a report of a student possibly possessing a firearm at De La Paz Middle School.

According to Riviera ISD, school staff immediately initiated safety protocols and law enforcement responded to the scene. The campus was placed on a temporary lockdown as a precaution while officers conducted a thorough search of the student, their belongings, and the district. No weapon was found.

The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the situation was a minor incident that had been significantly magnified by misinformation circulating in the community. Officials emphasized that at no point was there an immediate threat to students or staff.

“We want to assure our community that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priority,” said Riviera ISD Superintendent Tarrah Dobson. “The quick response and effective collaboration between school staff and local law enforcement were crucial in ensuring a swift and safe resolution.”

The Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office praised the rapid, coordinated response of surrounding agencies and thanked the community for its support and cooperation.

Normal school operations have since resumed. Both Riviera ISD and the Sheriff’s Office reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
