$227K in Cartel Cash Intercepted Before Reaching Mexico

South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force

KLEBERG COUNTY, TEXAS (News Release) - South Texas law enforcement agents seized more than $227,000 in suspected cartel-linked cash during a traffic stop this week, according to the South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force.

Authorities said the stop happened around 11:30 p.m. May 6 when Special Agent M. Galvan stopped a vehicle traveling from Houston to Matamoros, Mexico. During the roadside interview, agents observed what officials described as multiple indicators of criminal activity, leading to a search of the vehicle.

Special Agent E. Gonzalez later arrived to assist with the investigation and vehicle search.

During the search, task force agents discovered 10 vacuum-sealed bundles wrapped in duct tape concealed inside the vehicle’s rear seat and back wall area. Agents recovered and seized a total of $227,398 in U.S. currency.

Investigators said the money was determined to be proceeds from criminal activity and was allegedly destined for a cartel organization operating in Mexico.

Officials said criminal organizations continue using bulk cash smuggling to fund narcotics trafficking, weapons purchases and other violent criminal operations.

“Every seizure disrupts that pipeline and sends a message that South Texas highways are not safe corridors for cartel operations,” the task force said in a statement.

The South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force said it remains focused on targeting criminal organizations operating along the Texas-Mexico corridor and protecting local communities.
