Work Resuming on JFK Causeway Bridge

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Beginning Wednesday, January 3, weather permitting, Texas Department of Transportation contractors are scheduled to resume resurfacing travel lanes on the JFK Causeway bridge’s main span with a polyester polymer overlay.
This work will require continuous, single-lane closures of the inside (left) lanes on the bridge’s main span in both directions beginning at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday. This work, and the lane closures, will take place only on the bridge’s main span, not the entire causeway.
The schedule shows the completion of the overlay work is approximately three weeks.
The outside (right) eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open during the overlay work.
As previously announced, once the overlay work is completed, crews will then resurface the approaches to the bridge. The resurfacing work will require alternating, continuous, single-lane closures. The resurfacing will conclude work on top of the bridge that would affect traffic, and it is expected to be completed by the end of February. Work may still be taking place under the bridge.
The continuous, single-lane closures are a necessary part of the construction operation. Message boards are alerting drivers to the work and single-lane closures.
The maintenance project is designed to maximize the life of the bridge and to reduce the overall life-cycle costs of the bridge. Again, the work being done is on the bridge that spans the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, not the entire causeway.
The construction is focused on the main span of the bridge and includes repair to the substructure, superstructure, and railing. Also, existing armor joints and bearing pads are being replaced, and, lastly, a new overlay travel surface will be applied to the bridge deck.
