Tribute to Annual Texas Jazz Festival
Texas A&M University-Kingsville
KINGSVILLE (News Release) - The Texas A&M University-Kingsville School of Music will pay tribute to the Texas Jazz Festival which is usually held in Corpus Christi every year.
All jazz music lovers are invited to attend the outdoor concert from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, outside the Music Education Complex, located on the corner of Armstrong St. and Santa Gertrudis Ave.
“Texas A&M-Kingsville has been performing at the Texas Jazz Festival for many years and we consider the opportunity to perform there one of the highlights of our year,” said Dr. Paul Hageman, Director of the School of Music and Regents Professor of Jazz Studies at Texas A&M-Kingsville. “This year, due to the COVID situation, and the very large number of people who attend the three-day festival, the Texas Jazz Festival Society determined it was not conducive for all involved to hold the festival. So, we decided that we would hold our own small jazz concert, outdoors with lots of room for everyone in attendance, in homage to the Texas Jazz Festival.”
The concert, “A Salute to the Texas Jazz Festival” is the first performance of the semester for the jazz students. Concert-goers can bring their lawn chairs and enjoy performances by the jazz bands. The music performed will cover a wide variety of styles of jazz.
“Our event is not meant to replace the festival; rather, it is our way of paying tribute to the Texas Jazz Festival by providing a small performance on our campus,” Hageman said. “Our students have been working very hard in preparation for this concert. We are looking forward to this fun event.”
