While being detained, the driver bit and broke his cellular phone in what investigators described as an attempt to destroy evidence. Authorities said the action led to an additional charge.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to assist with the investigation.

The driver was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses, including tampering with physical evidence. Authorities did not immediately release the driver’s name or additional details about the charges.

Officials said the case underscores ongoing efforts by local and federal agencies to interdict illegal firearms and other contraband along Texas highways.
