TAMUK Student Media Competes at TIPA Conference

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (News Release) - Representatives from the student media at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) recently attended the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association’s conference and contest and came home with 29 awards, including five awards in the live contests against larger universities.

The Javelina Media Experience received five awards in the live contest against schools like Texas A&M University and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Ciana Cortez, a junior from Kingsville and Dominic Valdez, a senior from Eagle Pass, won first place in live hype video while Jacob Daniels, a junior from Corpus Christi, was first in live TV sports writing.
Daniels also placed second in live TV announcing and Jakob Salinas, a senior from Odem, was second in live radio English announcing. Bella Grossman, a junior from Alice, received honorable mention for live news photo.
The student media also placed well in the pre-published contest. Earning first place finishes were Matthew Roberts, a junior from Zapata, in general news photo; Mark Paz, a junior from Ricardo, and Cortez, in general news video story; Valdez in feature photo; and Briana Beltran, a graduate from Los Fresnos, Valdez and Grossman, video feature reporting.
Placing second were The South Texan for headline writing; Paz and Melissa Mata, a graduate from Corpus Christi, for general news audio story; Beltran and Valdez for general news multimedia story; Christopher Olivarez, a graduate from Skidmore, and Valdez, for in-depth video news reporting; and Daniels, Paz, Roberts and Olivarez, for social media coverage.
TAMUK had several third-place finishes. They included Mariana Soria, a junior from Eagle Pass, Karla Munoz, a junior from Corpus Christi, and Ethan Cavazos, a junior from Agua Dulce, general news multimedia story; The South Texan for both social media and video newscast; Mariana Arredondo, a graduate from Driscoll, static ad design; Paz and Mata, audio sports reporting; Roberts, sports action photo; Daniels and Cortez, video sportscast; and Paz, Grossman and Cavazos.
Honorable mention went to The South Texan for video news production and video program production; Paz, Roberts, Grossman and Cortez for multimedia feature; Daniel Moreno, a sophomore from Kingsville; advertising/PSA/promo; Beltran, newspaper feature page; and Olivarez, in-depth reporting.
In addition to the student winners, Nicole Morris, assistant professor of practice in communications, was named TIPA Advisor of the Year. This award recognizes individuals who go the extra mile in teaching and advising.
