TAMUK and Benavides ISD Launch Skilled Trades Partnership
Texas A&M University-Kingsville
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (News Release) - Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK), in partnership with the Rural Schools Innovation Zone (RSIZ) and Benavides Independent School District, today announced the launch of a new workforce training partnership at Benavides High School beginning August 2026.
The initiative will bring the Javelina Skilled Trades Academy directly to high school students, providing hands-on training in high-demand career pathways including carpentry, electrical, and HVACR. Students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications while gaining real-world experience aligned with regional workforce needs.
“Texas A&M-Kingsville is proud to partner with Benavides High School in connecting students from rural communities with critical workforce development, positioning students to meet evolving regional workforce demands,” said TAMUK President Dr. Robert Vela. “What makes this partnership truly impactful is that these efforts ensure that students in rural communities not only have access to high-quality training, but also clear pathways into higher education.”
This innovative model also creates a direct pathway from high school into higher education, allowing students to earn industry-recognized certifications while still enrolled in high school. These certifications can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree in applied science at TAMUK, helping students accelerate their progress and transition seamlessly into postsecondary education. This approach reduces barriers to degree completion and provides a clear, structured path from classroom to career.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to building a stronger workforce across South Texas,” said Jeff West, TAMUK Chief Workforce Development Officer. “By engaging students while they are still in high school, we are creating clear pathways to college, credentials, and meaningful careers. This approach ensures students gain early exposure to high-demand fields while developing the skills needed to succeed in today’s evolving workforce.”
The program reflects a coordinated regional effort to align K-12 education with workforce and higher education systems, ensuring students graduate with both academic and career-ready skills.
“We are excited to bring this opportunity to students,” said Dr. Sam Bueno, Superintendent of Benavides ISD. “This program opens doors, builds valuable skills, and provides a clear path to meaningful careers right here in South Texas.”
The program will be delivered through TAMUK’s Javelina Skilled Trades Academy, combining classroom instruction with hands-on lab experiences and real-world project-based learning. Students will graduate with industry credentials and a strong foundation for immediate employment or continued education.
“This initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration across school districts and higher education,” said Mike Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Rural Schools Innovation Zone. “By aligning resources and vision, we are creating sustainable pathways that prepare students for success in both college and the workforce.”
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger regional workforce by integrating education, training, and career pathways into a unified, student-centered model.
