Important Safety Tip for Little Swimmers

ANNAVILLE, TEXAS (News Release) - Your kid’s swimsuits or trunks could be a safety concern this Summer. The truth is yes, the color does matters. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of injury death from kids 5-9.

Drowning is QUICK AND SILENT, as opposed to what Hollywood paints it to be. Just below the surface of the water, many of the different colored swimsuits being sold today, can mimic leaves or a cluster of debris and NOT a drowning child.

The Annaville Fire Department wants to share with you how important the color of your child’s swimsuit is while tested to show visibility. Check out the results of how poorly visible some of the most commonly sold colors appear under water in both a swimming pool (dark and light pool) and at the lake/river and you be the judge!

There were 14 colors tested by Alive Solutions (a group that specializes in aquatic safety, training, and risk assessment). Popular colors, such as blues and greens, almost completely disappeared. Just as bright colored clothing can help you find your child in a crowd, test results proved bright, neon colors, including bright orange, yellow and green, are crucial in helping you spot a child in a body of water! The biggest losers are the white and light blue.

Think about these results the next time you get your kids swimsuits/trunks and be safe when it matters…AHEAD OF TIME! It’s that time of the year when children get to enjoy swimming while making good memories, but their safety should always come first!
