Repairs to Seawall

CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) - At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo and the City Council approved a $1.1 million dollar construction contract with Western Specialty Contractors to perform maintenance repairs on the seawall extending from McGee Beach to the Barge Dock, located in Council District 1.
This project will perform the maintenance repairs to the seawall (approximately 9,300-feet) and the eight Mirador concrete structures that are along the seawall including the Selena Memorial. The scope of the project includes concrete surface repairs, joint repairs, re-painting the top step of the seawall, pressure washing the steps of the seawall, skate stop installation on top step along length of seawall, replace drinking water fountains, and other minor work required to preserve the condition of the seawall. Most repairs are minor and consistent with routine maintenance of concrete marine structures.
"Our City Council is prioritizing the maintenance of our public facilities. For far too long our city delayed maintenance, but today is a new day and our greatest asset, our gorgeous Seawall, will receive the repairs it deserves. From the Selena Memorial to our eight Mirador structures, we will take care of our Seawall," said Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo.
The project will begin construction in April 2021 with anticipated completion by September 2021.
The Corpus Christi Seawall was originally constructed from 1939 to 1942. With the initiation of the Seawall Maintenance sales and use tax, a major project to repair the Seawall was completed in 2007 to address structural deterioration that had accumulated since the original construction. Those projects had a total cost of $43.4 million and were intended to extend the economic life by at least 50 years. This project is intended to address minor maintenance issues and prevent more rapid deterioration.
