CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) – Corpus Christi City Council approved an amendment to the Capital Improvement Program to include the Whitecap and Gypsy Bridges Scour Protection Project.

The $1.5 million Whitecap and Gypsy Bridges Scour Protection Project is designed to implement advanced scour protection measures to safeguard essential bridges against the erosive forces of moving water.

This project is part of a larger vision to enhance Padre Island's appeal as a premier destination and residential area, ensuring robust infrastructure that supports safe and efficient travel to and from the island.

Funding for the project comes from the unreserved fund balance in the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) #2 Fund. The amendment also includes necessary adjustments to the FY 2024 Operating and Capital Budgets to facilitate this vital infrastructure project.

“Today's approval of the Whitecap and Gypsy Bridges Scour Protection Project underscores our commitment to the safety and vitality of Padre Island,” Mayor Guajardo said. “By implementing advanced scour protection measures, we're safeguarding critical infrastructure against the erosive forces of nature, ensuring safe passage for residents and visitors alike.”

This initiative complements recent efforts to enhance Padre Island's connectivity, including the commencement of the public-private partnership Commodores Bridge project and the completion of the Don Patricio Bridge. These projects represent a significant investment in the island's future, aimed at creating a connected community through an expansive canal system.
