NAS KINGSVILLE (News Release) – Naval Air Station Kingsville will be participating in the Navy’s annual hurricane preparedness exercise, HURREX/CITADEL GALE 22, April 18-29.

The exercise is designed to prepare the U.S. Navy to respond to potential hurricane scenarios, prior to the onset of hurricane season (June 1-November 30). Over the course of the two-week exercise, a number of storm-related scenarios will be used to test the installation’s ability to prepare for tropical weather, test the endurance and response capabilities during heavy weather events, and to recover personnel and restore services after the storms have passed.

NAS Kingsville Commanding Officer Capt. Thomas Korsmo looks forward to the opportunity to test the air station’s readiness.

“We were fortunate in 2021 to have avoided severe tropical weather here in the Coastal Bend,” Korsmo said. “But we can’t count on that happening again this hurricane season. We need to test our ability to maintain mission readiness, and ensure the safety, security and accountability of our Sailors, civilians, contractors, and family members.”

Some exercise events and activities could cause temporary delays for vehicles entering or leaving the air station, and residents in the surrounding area may hear loudspeaker announcements and tests of the air station’s tornado siren.

“We will do everything we can to minimize the impact to the local community and we appreciate your patience and cooperation during the exercise,” he said.
