ROBSTOWN, TEXAS (News Release) - Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC) continues its commitment to education, leadership, and community by investing more than $63,000 in scholarships and youth leadership opportunities for students across Texas.

This year, NEC recognized 19 students whose academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to serving their communities exemplify the cooperative spirit. Through both scholarship awards and the Government-in-Action Youth Tour Program, NEC remains committed to empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers.

This year, NEC awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education and technical training:

• Two students received $8,000 scholarships in recognition of exceptional academic achievement and leadership.

• Twelve students were awarded $3,000 scholarships to support their college education.

• Three students pursuing vocational or trade programs received $4,000 scholarships, highlighting NEC’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce and supporting diverse career paths.

"Every year, we are inspired by the remarkable students who apply," said Avan Irani, CEO. "Their ambition, character, and dedication to making a difference remind us why investing in youth is one of the most important things we do as a cooperative. These students represent the future of our communities, and we are honored to support them as they pursue their dreams."

Developing Leaders Through the Government-in-Action Youth Tour In addition to academic scholarships, NEC selected two high school juniors to represent the cooperative during the 2026 Government-in-Action Youth Tour, an all-expense-paid leadership experience through Texas Electric Cooperative.

The weeklong journey began in Austin on June 14 and concluded in Washington, D.C., on June 21, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand about government, civic engagement, and American history. Along the way, they met with members of Congress, connected with fellow student leaders from across Texas, and visited some of the nation’s most historic landmarks. Each Youth Tour delegate will also receive a $1,000 scholarship upon completion of their senior year.

Programs like Youth Tour provide students with valuable educational experiences that foster leadership, broaden perspectives, and inspire civic responsibility and core values that align with the cooperative mission of building stronger communities.
