Oscar Rivera, San Patricio County Sheriff
MATHIS, TEXAS - (News Release) On July 26th in Mathis two San Patricio County Deputies were called to assist in the search for a man causing problems at a local store. The store clerk locked the doors after the man walked out and then called Mathis PD. Minutes later a second call came in from anther business reporting a similar situation with the same described man. Upon arrival to the scene our deputies confronted the suspect which resulted in a physical confrontation. Both deputies had a difficult time subduing him and he was able to get one of their batons and attack them with it. He put one of the deputies in a choke hold and the other deputy shot the suspect and after being shot he continued to fight the officers. We are grateful for Mathis PD plus a local citizen who came running to assist in taking the suspect into custody. The suspect was transported to an area hospital. Our deputies were also sent to the hospital and both are fine. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting and the suspect remains in the hospital in our custody with pending criminal charges.
