Freezing Rain/Ice Forces Runway Closure at CCIA Airport

Freezing Rain/Ice Forces Runway Closure at CCIA Airport

Press Release

CORPUS CHRISTI – Rain and sleet falling at the Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) has led to ice formation on the runways and taxiways. Airport Managers have made the decision to close the runways to air traffic until conditions improve.

Just like it does for drivers on a roadway, ice creates a hazard for pilots who are trying to maneuver aircraft through a departure, landing or even taxiing to and from the terminal. The closure has been communicated to commercial airlines and to all aviation users via a notification system managed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The runways and taxiways will remain closed until the ice melts and conditions are deemed safe again. The condition of the surfaces is being monitored by Operations personnel around the clock.

The commercial airlines that serve CCIA had already canceled most of their flights for late Sunday into Monday. If you are scheduled to fly in or out of CCIA in the next 48 hours, you should contact your airline for details.

The airport terminal will remain open throughout the duration of the weather event for any customer service or tenant assistance that may be needed.
