Firework Safety for Independence Day

Corpus Christi Fire Department

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - As the Independence Day holiday approaches, the Corpus Christi Fire Department reminds residents and visitors that the possession or discharge of fireworks within the city limits, including all city beaches, is illegal. Violators face strict penalties, including fines of up to $2,000 per package of fireworks.

To keep emergency lines open for life-threatening situations, the city requests that residents use the dedicated non-emergency line for fireworks complaints. The phone number to report illegal fireworks discharge is 361-886-2600. Please do not call 911 for fireworks complaints.

Citizens are encouraged to visit one of the professional fireworks displays occurring throughout the area, including the Mayor’s 4th of July Big Bang Celebration on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. along the seawall.

If you choose to discharge fireworks outside the City Limits, the following Fireworks Safety Facts can enhance safety:

  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

  • Older children should use fireworks only under close adult supervision.

  • Never light fireworks indoors.

  • Only use fireworks away from people, houses, and flammable materials.

  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

  • Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

  • Soak unused fireworks and used debris in water for a few hours before discarding them.

  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish fireworks that don't go off fully, or to put out a fire.
