Multiple basketball squads in the area have made the playoffs and, while some were eliminated in their first round of action, others are moving on to play this week.
Boys Class 4A
On Saturday, the H.M. King Brahmas took down the La Feria Lions in a blow out, 86-56 in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Leading the charge for the Brahmas was Nate Garcia, who notched 35 points in the contest.
Behind Garcia was Ace Lacour who had 10 points and Steven Alaniz with nine points on three buckets from beyond the arc.
Every player on the roster for the Bulls scored in the contest, and Head Coach Moses Mora said he can’t wait to see what else his team can do.
“They’re hungry; they know this is it, it’s either win or go home,“ Mora said. “We know started off a little slow in game, but we’ve always been a second half team. We make the adjustments, the players bought in and we got the ball rolling.”
The Brahmas also celebrated their District 31-4A championship following the game Saturday afternoon, as the team cut down the net inside the domes.
Next up for HMK is a matchup with the Crystal City Javelinas at Pleasanton High School. The area round contest will tip-off at 7 p.m.
Boys Class 3A
Both the Bishop Badgers and the Santa Gertrudis Academy Lions took to the hardwood in the bi-district round; however, only one came out on top in their respective contests.
The Badgers will move on in the playoffs after beating the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats in a lopsided affair, 73-43.
Donny Thomas led the Badgers with 22 points in the game, which lifted Bishop to the Area round.
They are awaiting the winner of the contest between Lyford and Santa Rosa.
The SGA Lion’s were eliminated from the Class 3A playoffs after falling to Aransas Pass last Friday night, 94-56.
Girls Class 3A
Both the Lady Badgers and the Lady Lions will move on to the regional quarterfinals in the playoffs, after they both won their Area matchups in blow-out fashion.
The Lady Badgers won their contest, 78-17, over the Lyford Bulldogs. For more details, check out the article here.
Bishop will face the Aransas Pass Lady Panthers on Tuesday at West Oso High School with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off.
The Lady Lions were the victors over IDEA Academy last week, 61-16. The next game for them will be against the Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cats on Tuesday at H.M. King High School at 6:30 p.m.
