Lady Badgers move on after big win over Lyford

The No. 17 ranked Bishop girls basketball team returned home as Class 3A Area champions, after the Lady Badgers defeated the Lyford Lady Bulldogs in a lopsided contest, 78-15.
The Lady Badgers started hot on a 15-0 run and left Lyford in the dust for the remainder of the game as they continued to challenge the Lady Bulldogs on both sides of the court.
“This is a very exciting win for us to get to the next level,” Bishop Head Coach Sherry Luna said. “The girls played team ball. All 11 of them contributed to the win and we had a lot of obstacles to jump through this week and all season. But the girls didn’t let that obstacle get in their way.”
JayDee Zamora led the way for the Lady Badgers with 15 points, as Katie Winters notched 12, and Ashlin Scott and Eleana Alverez both added 10 apiece.
“We have 11 different players who can all score in their different ways,” Zamora said. “We don’t care who scores as long as they have an open shot and we give it 110-percent because we have a goal we want to reach.”
Zamora said the she feels great after getting the win and heading to the next round is only a stepping stone to the team’s ultimate goal.
“I want to have the run that we had least year, except I really want to go further this time,” Zamora said. “Our goal is to make it to state. And we we’re going to fight so we make it there.”
Up next for the Lady Badgers is a game against the Aransas Pass Lady Panthers, and Luna said her team is just going to watch the film and prepare for what’s next.
“We take it a game at a time,” Luna said. “We’ll watch the film, get back in the gym and go from there.”
The details for the next round are still to be determined, but will be updated in this article, when the details are available.
