KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (News Release) - Two Rio Grande Valley men were arrested after authorities seized nearly $69,000 in cash they believe was tied to criminal activity during a traffic stop in Kingsville, according to the South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force.

The traffic stop occurred Wednesday, June 24, while special agents with the task force were working Operation Stonegarden.

According to the task force, agents observed what they described as multiple indicators of criminal activity during the stop. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered eight cellophane-wrapped bundles containing $68,800 in U.S. currency concealed inside the dashboard.

Investigators said they determined the money had been obtained through illicit criminal activity and was being transported to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested and booked into the Kleberg County Jail. Authorities said they are facing charges related to the investigation but did not immediately specify the charges.

The South Texas Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force said criminal organizations rely on moving cash to finance operations, including purchasing narcotics and weapons, and that disrupting the flow of illicit proceeds is a key part of ongoing enforcement efforts.

No additional information about the suspects has been released.
