TAMUK to honor Chancellor John Sharp

Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s will host its 2024 State of the University.

Highlighting this year’s program will be the honoring of Texas A&M University Chancellor John Sharp. Preceding that will be the State of the University Address from TAMUK President Dr. Robert Vela where he will discuss enrollment, workforce development, strategic initiatives and the University's economic impact in the Coastal Bend. Also included in the program will be a performance from Grupo Herencia Javelina Folklorico, an address on High Impact Student Experiences from senior Animal Science and Spanish major Myrka Gonzalez. There also will be performances by Mariachi Javelina and the Pride of South Texas Marching Band.

About Chancellor John Sharp

Chancellor John Sharp earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas A&M University, where he was a member of Squadron 6, the Corps staff of the Corps of Cadets, and the 1972 rugby team. He also was elected sophomore class president, student life chairman, Muster chairman, and student body president. Upon graduation, Sharp was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. He later earned a master’s in public administration from Texas State University. He is a distinguished alumnus from both universities. Sharp served more than three decades as a state legislator, senator, railroad commissioner and comptroller before becoming a partner at Ryan & Company. He became Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System in 2011.
