“We Hold These Truths,” a Great Questions in Government Student Seminar Presented by the Del Mar College Social Sciences Department as part of Constitution Day 2026

With an election coming up later this year, politics is certainly top-of-mind these days. As part of this year’s Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 17, Del Mar College’s Political Science Program with the Department of Social Sciences is hosting a Great Questions in Government student seminar titled “We Hold These Truths” with the public invited to observe. The seminar begins at 1 p.m. in The Studio (Room 218) in White Library on the Heritage Campus. Led by DMC Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Misty Parker, the seminar will be a discussion-based inquiry into the Declaration of Independence as well as quotes about the Declaration by various thought leaders in American political history. Students will be placed into small groups to discuss with Political Science faculty on hand to assist with the discussions. Due to the size of the room, observational seating may be limited.

What is Constitution Day? On Sept. 17, 1787, the country’s forefathers signed the final draft of the U.S. Constitution, which has stood the test of time for almost 230 years. In 2005, the U.S. Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act requiring all educational institutions receiving federal funding to observe Constitution Day, which is officially Sept. 17 every year.
