For 50 years, Del Mar College’s Stone Writing Center has served multitudes of students to become better and more confident writers. It’s the center’s mission. Humbly beginning as an English learning lab and then growing to become what was formerly known as the English Learning Center, the Stone Writing Center fulfills the vision and dream of the late Dr. Virginia Stone, who put the college on the map in 1976 as the first U.S. college to establish such a facility in the Southwest and as one of the oldest in the nation. On Wednesday, April 15, Del Mar College and Stone Writing Center staff will commemorate the Learning Resources’ facility with a Golden Anniversary Celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of White Library on the Heritage Campus. College alumni who used the SWC’s services over the years are invited to stop by and celebrate the center’s five decades of dedicated service that has fostered student success through instruction, implementation of advanced technology and other resources that improve DMC Vikings’ writing and communication skills. Enjoy Mariachi music, a bite to eat and the camaraderie of past and current students who have accessed the Stone Writing Center during its 50-year history.
