April marks National Poetry Month, and Del Mar College’s Mexican American Studies Program and the Languages Program with the Department, Languages and Reading will host a Poetry Panel Discussion and Poetry Reading from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, in Room 113 of the Coles Building on Heritage Campus.
Guest poets––retired DMC Professor Emeritus of Political Science Elizabeth N. Flores, who will participate virtually, and Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi Professor Emeritus of Spanish Dr. Javier Villarreal––will share their insights throughout the event, along with their poetry.
Moderated by Dr. Isabel Araiza, Coordinator of the DMC Mexican American Studies Program and Assistant Professor of Sociology, the panel discussion will cover the intricacies of translating poetry across languages, the impact of cultural context on translation and the challenges and strategies in maintaining poetic essence during translation. Afterward, both Flores and Dr. Villarreal will read poetry in both English and Spanish with translation provided by DMC Spanish Professor Javier Morin and Maria Mata, Coordinator of the DMC Languages Lab.
A Q&A session will follow to allow attendees to ask questions and interact with both the poets and translators. Celebrate poetry’s beauty and diversity as a form of expression during this enriching event that’s free and open to the public.
