Vaccination Clinics Result in Thousands Receiving Inoculations

Press Release

CORPUS CHRISTI – Eight hundred and forty-four individuals impacted by a now resolved software registration issue received a vaccination on February 4 at a drive thru clinic at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds. An average of about 280 shots per hour of the Pfizer vaccine were given to Phase 1A and 1B residents. The Corpus Christi – Nueces County Public Health District staff began to process and inoculate at 10:00 a.m. and the process was complete by 1:00 p.m. A second group of 1,000 people who also were part of the registration issue will be contacted to receive vaccines when the Health District receives its next supply.

The fairground vaccines were provided by CHRISTUS Spohn from their state allocation. CHRISTUS Spohn also provided healthcare professionals to assist the Health District in the preparation and delivery of the vaccines. The remaining vaccines were brought back to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline for immediate use at the hospital.

“The unprecedented public health partnership today by CHRISTUS Spohn and our Health District is a great demonstration of the success of our collaborative efforts in the immediate administration of 844 vaccines,” said Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo. “Cooperative public health to our residents administered this morning by Dr. Osbert Blow and his team of medical professionals was a display of heroism to our Corpus Christi residents. Our City Council is grateful to Dr. Osbert Blow and CHRISTUS Spohn for providing the supply and assistance to administer vaccines to our most vulnerable residents. We want to thank Dr. Osbert Blow and his team of professionals for their teamwork and outstanding partnership.”

“Today’s vaccine clinic at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds would not have been possible without the extraordinary contributions of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System,” said Barbara Canales, Nueces County Judge. “Dr. Osbert Blow, President & Chief Medical Officer for CHRISTUS Spohn, provided 1,000 Pfizer vaccinations from the hospital’s state allocation, and sent trained healthcare professionals to prepare and deliver those vaccines. With the vaccines they provided, we were able to vaccinate 844 people at the drive thru clinic at fairgrounds, and enable the delivery 40 vaccines to homebound residents in Robstown and Driscoll by Robstown Fire & EMS, Driscoll Public Works, and Annaville Fire Department (Nueces County ESD #1). I am grateful for Dr. Blow’s leadership and continued partnership with our City – County Public Health District’s effort to get as many of our most vulnerable people vaccinated as quickly as possible.”

On February 4 Driscoll Children’s Hospital and the City held a vaccination clinic inside the American Bank Center. One thousand and fifty pre-registered patrons 65 and older were vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine in about three hours. Driscoll Children’s Hospital is the second state approved vaccination hub site in Nueces County (City-County Health District is the first). Driscoll plans to hold multiple vaccination clinics in partnership with the City at the American Bank Center as vaccines become available.

More vaccines are expected in the coming days, weeks and months.
