CORPUS CHRISTI – (News Release) On March 22nd, City Council awarded a contract to H&S Constructors, Inc to construct upgrades and improvements on the Choke Canyon Dam Infrastructure for $5.5 million.

Owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), Choke Canyon Dam is maintained by the city. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires periodic dam safety inspections.

As a result of TCEQ inspections, the following upgrades were recommended to the Choke Canyon Dam infrastructure:

  • Outlet tower trash racks renovation

  • Stop log system safety improvements.

  • Concrete spalls repairs on the emergency spillway chute

  • Modernization and stabilization of the gantry crane

Construction of a new maintenance building also will be a part of the upgrades. The maintenance facility will be a small metal building with an engineered slab and limited electricity for lights and outlets.

Construction is scheduled to begin this month and is set to be completed in March 2023.
