UIL conference cutoffs announced; Bishop moves up to Class 4A, HMK, SGA, Riviera staying put.
By Frank Cardenas
After narrowly missing the mark to move up a UIL classification over the last 4 years, Bishop High School has eclipsed the marker that will send them to Class 4A in 2022.
The University Interscholastic League announced on Wednesday morning the conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2022-2024 reclassification and realignment.
Realignment for classifications and their districts will take place in February of 2022, now with some changes to look out for.
The numbers for the cutoff in each division are as follows:
Class 6A — 2,225 and above
Class 5A — 1,300-2,224
Class 4A — 545-1,299
Class 3A — 250-544
Class 2A — 105-249
Class 1A — 104.9 and below
Bishop turned in 549 students in its enrollment numbers, which was four students over the cutoff for Class 3A. Before the 2020-21 realignment, Bishop was sitting on the threshold to move up to Class 4A by one student, which kept them in 3A play for the last two years. A similar scenario happened in 2018, as well.
Enrollment will also have the Badgers playing in Class 4A Division II, in football, with the cutoff numbers running between 545-879 students.
As for others in the area, H.M. King will remain in Class 4A and Division I in football, as they turned in 962 students.
Santa Gertrudis turned in 375 students, keeping them in Class 3A, and Riviera turned in 194 students which keeps them in Class 2A.
Both schools will remain in Division I, for football.
Realignment is set for February, and there are already signs of more changes to come, especially at the 3A level for SGA, as Skidmore-Tynan drops down to Class 2A, and with Bishop moving up.
The UIL will make those announcements in the first quarter of 2022.
