The driver was not injured.

According to Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) rain accounts for more than 85% of weather-related roadway crashes in Texas when cars hydroplane.

If your car hydroplanes there are a few steps that TXDOT recommends.

  • Step off the accelerator until vehicle slows and tires grab the road again.

  • Turn in the direction of the skid-although it may seem counterintuitive, gently turn the car's steering wheel in the direction of the skid.

  • Wait to feel the tires reconnect with the road surface. Gently straighten the wheel as the car regains control.

  • Brake gently as needed. Do not slam on your brakes. Brake normally if the car has anti-lock brakes. Pump brakes gently if in an older vehicle without anti-lock brakes.
