Twigg Street Receives New Artistic Crosswalk and Pedestrian Crossing Signal
City of Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI – (News Release) The City's downtown area will receive the addition of a new crosswalk at the intersection of Shoreline Boulevard and Twigg Street to increase connectivity and pedestrian safety between the newly renovated seawall and the City's downtown businesses. The new crosswalk features extra-wide ADA-compliant ramps, a high-intensity activated crosswalk signal, an artistic thermoplastic design, and new landscaping.
"The improvements of the Twigg Street crossover on Shoreline Boulevard is part of the City's Street Preventative Maintenance Program, which prolongs the life of our city's streets," said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. "Additionally, the new pedestrian crosswalk will enhance safety for our residents and tourists as they visit our vibrant downtown area and add to significant street improvement efforts."
"This protected crosswalk connects our downtown hotels and businesses with our iconic waterfront. For years, you could not safely cross Shoreline Boulevard between I-37 and Peoples Street," said Alyssa Barerra Mason, Executive Director of the Downtown Management District. "Thoughtful features like this are key to keeping us up to date with the national trend of walkability."
The artistic crosswalk design also celebrates the City's partnership with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) by adding blue and green Islanders branding colors.
TAMUCC President Kelly Miller said, "A&M-Corpus Christi is honored that the City of Corpus Christi has chosen Islander blue and green to enhance this downtown crosswalk. This not only helps to highlight that the University has added a location in the downtown area, but it also is a testament to the collaboration and partnership between the University and the City."
The installation of the thermoplastic crosswalk will begin on August 3 and is expected to be completed by Friday, August 5. Additionally, the high-intensity crosswalk signal will be activated upon completion of the thermoplastic installation.
