Texas Begins Enforcement of Commercial Automated Vehicle Requirements

AUSTIN, TEXAS (News Release) – New rules of the road for commercial automated vehicles in Texas are now in effect. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) has begun enforcing the state’s automated vehicle authorization requirements with the launch of a public complaint process for reporting serious public safety concerns involving commercially operated automated vehicles.

The requirements were created under Senate Bill 2807, passed by the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025, establishing a statewide regulatory framework for the commercial operation of automated vehicles on Texas roads.

As of May 28, 2026, companies operating automated motor vehicles commercially in Texas must maintain an active authorization issued by TxDMV. Members of the public and law enforcement can verify whether a company is properly authorized and submit public safety complaints through the Automated Motor Vehicle Lookup page.

The department’s new complaint process allows the public to report concerns related to the safe operation of commercially operated automated vehicles. Information about the complaint process and the Automated Vehicles Regulatory Program is available at www.TxDMV.gov/AVprogram.

Under state law, TxDMV is responsible for issuing automated vehicle authorizations and administering enforcement related to authorization use compliance. The Texas Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies retain authority for on-road safety enforcement and oversight of traffic law compliance.
