TAMUK Music faculty Member Wins Prestigious Book Award

KINGSVILLE (News Release) - Dr. Alexander Sanchez-Behar, associate professor of music theory in the School of Music at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, recently received the Vincent H. Duckles Award from the Music Library Association for his book, John Adams: A Research and Information Guide.

“This book is a comprehensive guide to the musical works and literature of one the leading American composers of our time,” Sanchez-Behar said.

The Vincent H. Duckles Award is the Music Library Association’s annual prize for the best book-length bibliography or reference work in music.

Sanchez-Behar came to Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2016. He teaches various levels of aural training and musicianship in addition to analytical techniques and advanced musical analysis. Prior to coming to Kingsville, he was associate professor of music theory and composition at Ashland University.

His research focuses on minimalism, with particular emphasis on the music of John Adams. He has published articles in American Music, American Music Teacher, Bach, College Music Symposium, Music Theory Spectrum, Indiana Theory Review, Oxford Music Online, Ritmo and Tempo.

Sanchez-Behar received his bachelor’s degree in music from University of California, Berkeley, his master’ in music theory from Northwestern University and his doctorate in music theory from Florida State University.
