KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - The City of Kingsville held a special dedication ceremony Wednesday at Dick Kleberg Park to rename the girls’ t-ball softball field in honor of longtime umpire David Chavez.

Chavez, who passed away in January, served as an umpire in the Kingsville community for more than 32 years. His dedication to local youth sports left a lasting impact on generations of players and families.

The renaming effort was led by Chavez’s fiancée, Hermelinda Del Moral, who gathered more than 2,500 signatures from Kingsville residents in support of the change.

“This journey—it was an eight-day journey for me in getting these signatures from the community,” Del Moral said. “In those eight days, I collected 2,525 signatures and heard so many stories from parents and grandparents who loved him for the time he spent caring for their kids and grandkids.”

The newly renamed David Chavez Field now stands as a tribute to his years of service and the positive influence he had on Kingsville’s youth sports.
