Road Closures for the Week of May 21 – May 28, 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) - The Weekly Road Closures includes locations of road construction and events where lane and street closures affect traffic flow along the City’s major streets and lanes. All closures are subject to change due to weather, emergency work, or other circumstances. More information on City Projects can be found online at https://www.cctexas.com/streetinfo.

Work zones safety is a priority. Motorists are advised to slow down, follow posted speed limits, pay attention, watch out for workers, obey signs and flaggers and allow additional travel time for delays. The road closures for this coming week are as follows:

CITY PROJECTS

Airline Road – South Padre Island Drive to McArdle Road (Bond 2018)

During Phase 2 of the Airline Road project, between South Padre Island Drive and McArdle Road, traffic is shifted to the west side of the roadway (southbound lanes) along Airline Road. Traffic is reduced to one lane, in each direction, within the construction limits.

During this phase, the following traffic changes and lane closures are will be in effect:

  • Left turns are restricted from Airline Road (southbound) onto McArdle Road (westbound).

  • The right lane (northbound thru lane) will be closed at the intersection of Airline Road and South Padre Island Drive (SPID). Thru traffic will be merged into a single lane. The left-turn lane and right-turn lane at the SPID intersection will remain open.

  • The left lane (southbound thru lane) will be closed at the intersection of Airline Road and McArdle Road. Thru traffic will be merged into the right lane. The left-turn lane and the free right-turn at the McArdle Road intersection will remain open.

  • The right lane along McArdle Road (eastbound direction) will be closed at the intersection of Airline Road and McArdle Road. Thru traffic will be merged into a single lane. The left-turn lane will remain open.

  • The shared left/thru lane along the South Padre Island Drive frontage road (eastbound direction) will be closed at the intersection of Airline Road. Thru traffic will be merged into the shared thru/right lane.

  • Driveway openings are provided for business access within the project limits. Access is limited to right-in/right-out only.

  • Sidewalks will be closed along the west side of Airline Road between McArdle Road and South Padre Island Drive.

Ayers Street Pedestrian Improvement and Turn Lane – South Padre Island Drive (SPID) to Gollihar Road (Bond 2014)

Northbound Ayers Street is closed at the Crosstown/SPID Interchange (frontage road) intersection. Thru traffic is encouraged to seek alternate routes to access businesses in the area. Ayers Street is also reduced to one lane, one-way traffic from Gollihar Road to SPID (southbound direction only).

Additionally, RTA bus stops are closed from Gollihar Road to SPID. Bus stops remain open at the Port Ayers Transfer Station.

During this phase, the following traffic changes and lane closures are implemented:

  • Johanna Street to Crosstown/SPID Interchange (Northbound) – The outside thru lane on Ayers Street is closed approaching the Crosstown/SPID interchange. This lane closure will continue through the underpass of SPID. This closure will not impact access to the eastbound frontage road of SPID.

  • Johanna Street to Crosstown/SPID Interchange (Southbound) - The left turn lane and median openings are closed.

  • Crosstown/SPID Interchange & Ayers Street Intersection (Northbound) – Northbound Ayers Street is CLOSED at the Crosstown/SPID Interchange intersection. Motorists must use alternate detour routes such as the SH 286 northbound frontage road, Gollihar Road, Kostoryz Road, or McArdle Road to access local businesses.

  • Crosstown/SPID Interchange to Gollihar Road – Ayers Street is reduced to one-lane, one-way traffic flow in the southbound direction only. Access to all local businesses is provided.

  • Ayers Street and Gollihar Road Intersection – The outside thru lane on Ayers Street, in the southbound direction only, is closed approaching the Gollihar Road intersection.

  • SH 358 Frontage Road (Eastbound) – The shared thru left turn lane is closed.

Everhart Road – Holly Road to South Padre Island Drive (Type B)

During Phase 6, drivers and pedestrians should expect the following traffic changes: 

  • The east side of Everhart Road (northbound lanes) will be closed for reconstruction between Corona Drive and the South Padre Island Drive frontage road (eastbound).

  • Northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the west side of Everhart Road between South Padre Island Drive and Corona Drive.

  • Traffic signals at the Corona Drive intersection will operate in flash mode to allow motorists along Everhart Road to proceed thru the intersection with caution.

  • Travel lanes will be open along Corona Drive to allow a “right-only” movement from Everhart Road onto Corona Drive.

  • Corona Drive will remain closed to thru traffic between Embassy Drive and the Everhart Road intersection. Access to local businesses and residences will be provided.

  • Corona Drive will remain closed to thru traffic between Betty Jean Drive/Blanche Moore Drive and the Everhart Road intersection. Access to local businesses and residences will be provided.

  • Sidewalks will be closed along the eastside of Everhart Road between Corona Drive and the South Padre Island Drive frontage road (eastbound).

  • Northbound traffic along Everhart Road will merge and be reduced to the right lane approaching the South Padre Island Drive frontage road (westbound). The free right will remain open to access the South Padre Island Drive frontage road (westbound).

  • Motorists traveling in each direction under the South Padre Island Drive overpass must obey and follow the lane assignment signs and pavement markings to safely proceed through the signalized intersection.

Holly Road – Crosstown Expressway (SH 286) to Greenwood Dr (Bond 2012)

During Phase 1, drivers and pedestrians should expect the following traffic changes:

  • Holly Road is reduced to one lane, one-way traffic in the westbound direction (SH 286 to Greenwood Drive).

  • The southbound left-turn lane on Greenwood Drive, at the Holly Road intersection, is closed.

  • The right-turn lane, along northbound Greenwood Drive, is closed at the Holly Road intersection.

  • The eastbound thru lane, along Holly Road, is closed at the Greenwood Drive intersection.

  • Sidewalks within the construction zone are closed.

Laguna Shores Road – South Padre Island Drive to Graham Road (Bond 2018)

Laguna Shores Road, between South Padre Island Drive and Graham Road, is closed for reconstruction. Motorists are advised to use Waldron Road as an alternative route for thru traffic. Access is provided within the closed roadway segments to residences and businesses within the work zone.

Laguna Shores Road – Hustlin’ Hornet Drive to Caribbean Drive (Bond 2018)

NEW - On Thursday, May 20, the intersection of Laguna Shores Road and Hustlin’ Hornet Drive was closed to perform underground drilling required to perform a new waterline installation under the Beasley Channel. Access will be provided only to residents of Beasley Road.

On Tuesday, May 25, Laguna Shores Road, between Glenoak Drive and Caribbean Drive, will be closed to perform new waterline installation under the Van Galen Channel. This closure will prohibit access to and travel over the channel. Residents north of the channel are advised to use Glenoak Drive, and residents south of the channel are advised to use Caribbean Drive to access homes and businesses. Both closures are expected to last up to two weeks, weather permitting.

Laguna Shores Road, between Hustlin’ Hornet Drive to Caribbean Drive, is closed for reconstruction. Motorists are advised to use Waldron Road as an alternative route for thru traffic. Access is provided within the closed roadway segments to residences and businesses within the work zone.

Laguna Shores Road – Mediterranean Drive to Wyndale Street (Bond 2018)

Laguna Shores Road, between Mediterranean Drive to Wyndale Street, is closed for reconstruction. Motorists are advised to use Waldron Road as an alternative route for thru traffic. Access is provided within the closed roadway segments to residences and businesses within the work zone.

Leopard Street – Palm Drive to Nueces Bay Boulevard (Bond 2018)

Travel lanes are reduced to one lane, each direction, along the westbound lanes (north side) of Leopard Street between Nueces Bay Boulevard and Battlin Buc Boulevard. Motorists traveling eastbound along Leopard Street are shifted to the westbound lanes (north side) at Old Robstown Road. Nueces Bay Boulevard is also closed between Leopard Street and Up River Road.

Morgan Avenue –Crosstown Expressway to South Staples Street (Bond 2012)

Morgan Avenue is reduced to one lane, one-way traffic flow in the eastbound direction between Crosstown Expressway and South Staples Street. Construction may require intermittent daily closures of local residential streets intersecting Morgan Avenue. Pedestrians should expect sidewalk closures within the construction zone.

Ocean Drive Rehabilitation Project – Airline Road to Ropes Street

Ocean Drive is reduced to one lane, in each direction, on the south side of Ocean Drive (westbound lanes) between Ropes Street and Airline Road. Access to properties within the work zone will be maintained at all times.

Ohio Avenue – Staples Street Project, Bay Ltd.

Ohio Avenue is closed to thru traffic between Staples Street and Swantner Drive for sanitary sewer utility construction. Access to properties within the work zone will be maintained at all times.

North Lexington Boulevard – City Project SUE, CobbFendley

North Lexington Boulevard will be reduced to one lane, two-way traffic. Flagger operations will be in place at various locations between Leopard Street and Hopkins Road.

Park Road 22 Bridge and Channel – Whitecap Boulevard to Commodores Drive (SH 361)

Phase 1 of the Park Road 22 Bridge and Channel project is underway on the east side (northbound lanes) of Park Road 22. Motorists traveling northbound along Park Road 22 are shifted to the southbound lanes (west side) between Cruiser Street and Compass Street. Travel lanes are reduced to one lane, in each direction, along the southbound lanes (west side) between Cruiser Street and Compass Street.

Six Points Intersection - Street and Signal Improvements (Bond 2018)

During Phase 1A, the intersection of 10th Street and Ayers Street is closed. Drivers and pedestrians should expect the following traffic changes: 

  • Ayers Street, between the Six Points Intersection and 10th Street, is closed to thru traffic.

  • Ayers Street, between Brownlee Boulevard and 10th Street, is closed to thru traffic. Local access is provided to businesses.

  • The “Right Only” travel lane is closed along southbound Staples Street between Alameda Street and the Six Points Intersection.

  • 10th Street, between Ayers Street and Staples Street, is closed to thru traffic. Local access is provided to businesses.

  • Motorists traveling in the right lane, along westbound Ayers Street, must turn right at the Six Points Intersection.

  • Sidewalks and crosswalks at the immediate intersection of Ayers Street and 10th Street are closed.

On Friday, May 28, the contractor will begin Phase 1B of the project. Drivers and pedestrians should expect to see the following changes:

  • The “Right-Only” travel lane will remain closed along southbound Staples Street between Alameda Street and the Six Points Intersection.

  • 10th Street will be closed between Ayers Street and South Staples Street.

  • The right lane along Ayers Street, in the northbound direction, will be closed between Brownlee Boulevard and 10th Street.

  • The right lane along South Staples Street, in the southbound direction, will be closed between the Six Points intersection and 10th Street.

  • Sidewalks will be closed within the work zone.

Staples Street – Baldwin Boulevard to Kostoryz Road (Bond 2018)

On Monday, May 17, the intersection of Louisiana Avenue and Kosar Street with Staples Street on the east side will be closed to install storm water utilities. This closure is expected to last two (2) weeks.

During Phase 1 of construction on Staples Street, between Baldwin Boulevard and Kostoryz Road, drivers and pedestrians should expect the following traffic changes:

  • The northbound lanes and center turn lane (east side) of Staples Street, between Baldwin Boulevard and Kostoryz Road, will be closed for construction. Traffic will be shifted to the west side of Staples Street (southbound lanes) and reduced to one lane in each direction.

  • Traffic along northbound Staples Street will be shifted to the west side (southbound lanes) of the roadway approaching the Kostoryz Road intersection.

  • The inside left-turn lane will be closed along Kostoryz Road at the Staples Street intersection.

  • Sidewalks will be closed on the east side of Staples Street, within the construction zone.

Swantner Drive – Indiana Avenue to Texan Trail (Bond 2018)

Swantner Drive is closed to thru traffic between Indiana Avenue and Ralston Avenue for reconstruction. Chamberlain Drive is also closed between Reid Drive and Swantner Drive. Access to local residents is provided.

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION

Airline Road – (Rockport Fiber)

Night Work - Beginning Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at 9:00 p.m., Southbound Airline Road will be reduced to one travel lane between Holly Road and Cimarron Boulevard. Rockport Fiber will be installing a new neighborhood fiber service line. Closures will be performed at night and will be removed each day before morning traffic starts. This work is expected to last several days.

Coleman Avenue – 12th Street to 11th Street (AEP, Mastec)

Coleman Street between 12th Street and 11th Street is closed to thru traffic to perform utility work.

Doss Street - Mestina Street to Leopard Street (Guerra Underground Construction)

Traffic flow along Doss Street has been temporarily converted to one-way, in the northbound direction, between Mestina Street and Leopard Street to complete utility relocation work for the Harbor Bridge.

Flato Road – (Rock Engineering)

Beginning Wednesday, May 26, Flato Road will be reduced to one travel lane in both directions between Bates Drive and Bear Lane. A City Contractor will be drilling geotechnical cores at various locations for future street projects on Flato Road. Closures are mobile and will vary as drilling locations progress.

Flour Bluff Drive (AEP Texas, Lintec)

The contractor is performing daily right lane closures, in the southbound direction, along Flour Bluff Drive to perform utility work.

Greenwood Drive – (AEP/Northstar)

Beginning Monday, May 24, southbound Greenwood Drive will be reduced to one travel lane between South Padre Island Drive and Holly Road. Contractors for AEP are installing new power poles and electrical lines. Lane closures will be implemented daily and are expected to last a month.

Harbor Drive (Hamman Excavating)

Portions of Harbor Drive, north of Hirsch Street, are closed for reconstruction for several months. This includes the traffic circle and the southbound lane that connects to it. Two-way traffic will be maintained along the segment of Harbor Drive between Hirsch Street and the Solomon Ortiz Center parking lot.

Hearn Road – (Rock Engineering)

Beginning Thursday, May 27, Hearn Road will be reduced to one travel lane for both directions between Calicoatte Road to the dead end. A City Contractor will be drilling geotechnical cores at various locations for a future street project on Hearn Road. Closures are mobile and will vary as drilling locations progress.

Kennedy Avenue (Guerra Underground Construction)

Kennedy Avenue between Leopard Street and Antelope Street is closed to relocate a sanitary sewer line for the City of Corpus Christi as part of Harbor Bridge construction. This full street closure is expected to last several months.

Leopard Street (Guerra Underground Construction)

Leopard Street between Lexington Avenue and Stillman Avenue is closed to relocate a sanitary sewer line as part of Harbor Bridge Construction. This closure is expected to last several months.

Leopard Street (AT&T)

There are various lane closures along Leopard Street between Palm Drive and Old Robstown Road to relocate a duct bank and utilities.

Mexico Street/Mestina Street (Guerra Underground Construction)

Mexico Street between Leopard Street and Lipan Street is closed to replace a sanitary sewer line for the City of Corpus Christi as part of Harbor Bridge construction. Westbound Mestina Street is closed to thru traffic at Josephine Street. Local access is provided to residents. This street closure is expected to last several months.

Ocean Drive (AEP Texas)

On Wednesday, May 26, the contractor will be performing repairs to AEP facilities. The work will cause an outage affecting the traffic signals at the intersection of Ocean Drive and Elizabeth Street. The outage is expected to begin at 8 a.m. and last 6 – 8 hours.

Port Avenue (Flatiron/Dragados LLC)

On Monday, May 24, Port Avenue between Antelope Street (IH 37 eastbound frontage road) and Leopard Street will be closed through June 14.  The long-term closure is necessary for utility work related to the Harbor Bridge Project.

Motorists heading southbound on Port Avenue will be detoured onto Martin Luther King Drive and follow the detour signs to Nueces Bay Boulevard and Leopard Street. Motorists traveling northbound on Port Avenue will be detoured left onto Leopard Street and follow the signs to Nueces Bay Boulevard and Antelope Street. Motorists traveling southbound on IH 37 can use the Buddy Lawrence/Nueces Bay Boulevard exit to access Leopard Street and the Port Avenue area.

Portable message signs will be in place to assist motorists with navigating the alternate routes.  Business driveways along the closed section of Port Avenue will be granted access for customers and employees.

The Esplanade Drive – (South Texas Soil Services)

Night Work - Beginning Tuesday, May 25, at 9:00 p.m., eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Traffic patterns will shift from one side to the other as construction progresses. Contractors will be installing a new water service line for new development. Closures will be performed at night and will be removed each day before morning traffic starts. This work is expected to last several days.
