Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Marks Opening of New Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - Officials, dignitaries, and community members gathered on Saturday to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly constructed Harbor Bridge - a transformative $1.3 billion infrastructure project set to redefine transportation and economic opportunity in South Texas.

The southbound lanes of the new Harbor Bridge are now open to traffic, with northbound lanes scheduled to follow in early July. Once fully operational, the bridge will serve as a vital artery for regional commerce, mobility, and development.

Spanning 3,295 feet, the new Harbor Bridge is the longest concrete segmental cable-stayed bridge in North America. Towering 538 feet, it is built high enough to accommodate Neo-Panamax vessels, positioning the Port of Corpus Christi to compete more effectively with other Gulf Coast deepwater ports.

"The new Harbor Bridge is not only a testament to the collaboration, expertise, and dedication of the public and private sectors - it's a gateway for jobs, trade, and continued growth in the Coastal Bend,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “To remain the Best State for Business, Texas must bolster our roadway infrastructure to meet the demands of our booming economy.”

Texas Transportation Commissioner Alejandro “Alex” Meade III praised the engineering behind the structure, “This new landmark is a shining example of the innovative spirit of Texas and the commitment and collaboration of the community. With an expected service life of 170 years, this bridge will benefit the region for decades to come by providing faster commutes, safer travel, and more economic opportunity.”

The new bridge replaces an aging structure built to World War II-era standards. The existing Harbor Bridge lacks modern safety features such as shoulders, has a steep grade and reverse curve, and has a higher-than-average accident rate. It also incurs high maintenance costs and lacks pedestrian or bicycle access.

In contrast, the new bridge includes a 10-foot-wide, 2.4-mile shared-use path with an observation deck, providing a safe and scenic route for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched the Harbor Bridge Project to improve safety, enhance mobility, and support the economic growth of the Port of Corpus Christi and the surrounding region. The project will facilitate the efficient movement of people, goods, and military equipment while reducing accident rates and meeting future traffic demand.

Key Features of the New Harbor Bridge:

·        Total Length: 3,295 feet

·        Tower Height: 538 feet

·        Shared-Use Path: 10-foot-wide, 2.4 miles long, including observation deck

·        Vessel Clearance: High enough for Neo-Panamax ships

·        Expected Service Life: 170 years

With yesterday’s opening, the Coastal Bend celebrates not only a major milestone in transportation infrastructure but a bold step forward in regional development and global trade access.
