Residents Encouraged to Prepare for Forecasted Heavy Rains

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX— Heavy rains are forecasted for the Corpus Christi area Tuesday night through Thursday. Rainfall amounts of 8 to 10 inches could lead to areas of flash flooding. As the City monitors weather conditions, residents are encouraged to safeguard family, pets, and property.
During inclement weather, we want our community to be safe. If you must get out in harsh conditions, remember:
Do not drive around barricades.
Drive slower than usual so you have time to react to other traffic on the roadway.
Turn on your headlights so you are visible to other vehicles and pedestrians.
Be aware of possible flooding in low-lying areas. If you must be on the road, be aware and find an alternative route.
Whether driving or walking, if you approach a flooded road, follow this rule: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
The Public Works Department is prepared to place barricades in areas prone to flooding, including, but not limited to, Flour Bluff, North Beach, and Las Colonias near La Volla Creek. High-water rescue vehicles also will be staged to respond to any potential emergencies.
Crews are clearing storm drains and will monitor several street construction sites and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
The Solid Waste Services Department reminds residents that street flooding can turn over trash and recycling carts. Do not place them in street gutters. If necessary, place carts in the area behind the curb but not blocking the sidewalk.
Residents are asked not to tamper with City manhole covers and should not remove covers to sewer sanitary clean-outs on their property as this could lead to stormwater entering the sewer system.
The Parks and Recreation Department has removed all lifeguard stands, portable restrooms, and trash cans from the Gulf-facing beaches. A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect until Thursday. Beachgoers should be aware of possible hazardous conditions.
City pools, splash pads, and Senior Centers will be closed on Wednesday, June 19.
Home Delivered Meals Program clients will receive regular meals on Tuesday and shelf-stable meals for Wednesday and Thursday.
The 311 Customer Call Center will be open for non-emergency calls from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Pet owners are reminded to provide adequate shelter for their animals. Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) is prepared to respond to animals in need due to the weather. Officers will respond to service requests for animals in standing water or needing rescue. Please contact the 311 Customer Call Center for assistance.
Travelers flying through Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA), should check with their airline to ensure their flight is not delayed or canceled before heading to the airport.
