Public Libraries Receive $2.4 Million in Grant Funding
CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) –Corpus Christi City Council approved $2.4 million from the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) for the Corpus Christi Public Libraries (CCPL) to provide 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspot devices for qualifying residents.
The Wi-Fi hotspots will be available for checkout at each of the six library locations, but participants must have a library card. In addition, CCPL is partnering with Prospera Housing Community Services and the Corpus Christi Housing Authority & Affiliates to distribute Wi-Fi hotspot devices to qualifying individuals and families residing within their housing communities.
T-Mobile USA will provide 12 months of high-speed internet service for the devices. The Federal Communications Commission provides funding to libraries across the country through its ECF grants program, promoting broadband equity.
“This is a vital resource that will assist families and children in bridging the digital divide,” Mayor Paulette Guajardo said. “The city is proud to accept this $2.5 million Federal grant for our library system, which will improve our communities’ overall access to educational information.”
CCPL will provide the public with a specific launch date on the library’s website when it becomes available.
