Officers Seize $56K Worth of Narcotics

BROWNSVILLE (News Release) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry intercepted alleged narcotics with an estimated street value of $55,942.

 “As these two seizures illustrate, our frontline CBP officers continue to do an outstanding job in securing our borders while preventing dangerous substances from entering the nation,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry.

The first seizure took place on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Gateway International Bridge when a 20-year-old male United States citizen from Brownsville, Texas, applied for entry into the United States driving a 2008 Chevy Silverado.  The vehicle was referred to CBP secondary for further examination after a primary inspection.  In secondary, with the aid of a non-intrusive imaging system (NII), CBP officers discovered 100 packages hidden within the 2008 Chevy Silverado.  CBP officers removed the packages, which contained a total of 109 pounds of alleged marijuana with an estimated street value of the approximately $21,772.

The second seizure took place on Wednesday, Aug. 18, also at the Gateway International Bridge when a 21-year-old male United States citizen from Brownsville, Texas applied for entry into the United States driving a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. The vehicle was referred to CBP secondary for further examination.  Upon inspection of the vehicle and with the use of a non-intrusive imaging system (NII) and canine unit, CBP officers discovered a total of 4.43 pounds of alleged cocaine hidden within the vehicle.  The narcotic has an estimated street value of $34,170.

CBP officers seized the narcotics, the vehicles, arrested the travelers, and turned them over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents for further investigation.
