Nueces County to Dedicate Alamo Letter at Courthouse

Nueces County, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - Nueces County will be gifted a 203-pound bronze plaque containing Col. William Barrett Travis’s “Victory or Death” letter at the Nueces County Courthouse on Thursday, March 28 at 9:00 a.m., followed by a public screening of The Alamo at Cole Park Amphitheater on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m.

As part of a statewide initiative, the Nueces County Alamo Letter Plaque will be presented to Nueces County Judge Connie Scott on Thursday at the Courthouse by Alamo Letter Society Founders Slone McNutt and her father Bill McNutt as well as Nueces County Chair Harry Chester. This ceremony, featuring the Presentation of Colors, a live performance of The Star-Spangled Banner, and a reading of the “Victory or Death” letter, will serve as the third official dedication in Texas, following Ellis and Rockwall counties.

Nueces County and the Alamo Letter Society encourage all to continue the reflection of Texas’ forefathers’ fight for freedom and liberty at a free movie night with a screening of the 1960 classic The Alamo, directed by and starring John Wayne at sunset on Friday at Cole Park Amphitheater. Families are invited to bring chairs and blankets to watch the movie, rated TV-PG. A food truck will be on-site. Alcohol is prohibited.

“We are proud Texans here in Nueces County, and this plaque will be a permanent reminder to honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom,” says Nueces County Judge Connie Scott. “We are excited to be one of the first counties to display the letter at our Courthouse, and we look forward to a community-wide movie night to ‘remember the Alamo.’”

The Alamo letter was written on February 24, 1836, and heroically dispatched through the Mexican Army to General Sam Houston by Captain Albert Martin. Only 220 words long, many Texans and other Freedom-loving people around the world hold it in the same high esteem as the U.S. Constitution and the Magna Carta.

The Alamo Letter Society launched in 2023 with the Mission Statement: “To educate current and future Texans about their forefathers' armed struggle for Freedom and Liberty through the placement of a large bronze plaque containing Col. William Barrett Travis's Alamo ‘Victory or Death’ letter in all 254 Texas Courthouses.”

The Alamo Letter Society exists to educate school children, new Texans, and future generations, of their forefathers' fight for Liberty, and Freedom, through the placement of a large 203-pound bronze plaque containing the Alamo letter at each of the 254 courthouses in the Lone Star State.
