New Varient of COVID-19 Found in Nueces County

CORPUS CHRISTI - Nueces County Public Health District received notification from the Texas Department of State Health Services about a Nueces County resident diagnosed with the B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, B.1.1.7 is a variant strain first identified in the United Kingdom and has been found in at least eight U.S. states and in more than 33 countries around the globe. Currently, there is no evidence B.1.1.7 causes more severe illness or increased risk of death.
The individual is a male between 60 and 70 years of age who recently visited the United Kingdom where he believes he contracted the disease. The man is recovering at home in isolation until he is released by the local health authority to prevent further spread of this new variant in Nueces County.
Studies on all new coronavirus variants are ongoing. Early data seems to suggest the current COVID-19 vaccine would be able to protect against this variant, but more studies are necessary. Therefore, it is crucial everyone receives the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible as they qualify under various phases. Current phases of vaccination eligibility are Phase 1A and 1B.
