New LED Illuminated City Street Signs

CORPUS CHRISTI – The City Council approved the purchase of 56 new LED internally illuminated street name signs. Funding of nearly $74,000 comes from funding available through the FY 2021 Streets Fund.
The Public Works Department aims to improve the safety at all signalized intersections in the City by enhancing the nighttime visibility and illumination of street name signs. Street names at some signalized intersections are internally illuminated with fluorescent bulbs. Many are no longer working or require routine maintenance to remain serviceable. The proposed use of internally illuminated light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs will provide better illumination, are more energy efficient, and require less maintenance than the existing fluorescent bulbs signs.
There are 252 signalized intersections in the City. Only 63 of these intersections have been upgraded to LED signs. These intersections were upgraded as part of traffic signal improvements on Capital Improvement Program projects or routine maintenance due to failure of the existing signs. This purchase will continue efforts to enhance safety while providing uniformity at signalized intersections city-wide.
The Public Works Department plans to increase maintenance efforts by planning the removal and replacement of existing signs on a yearly basis. A total of 56 LED signs will be installed at 13 signalized intersections. Nine of the 13 intersections will receive illuminated street name signs for the first time. The company’s products and services carry a 60-month warranty from date of product shipment.
“The new internally-illuminated LED street signs will help enhance street name visibility for drivers. Public safety is one of my top priorities and upgrading our street signs makes our City safer,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said.
