Need Outpaces Giving as Asbury's Thanksgiving for 1,000 Enters Final Push

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - With less than three weeks until the Nov. 2 deadline, Asbury Methodist Church’s annual Thanksgiving for 1,000 has raised only 34% of its goal.

Now in its sixth year, the campaign has helped feed roughly 5,000 families through local schools, nonprofits and veterans in affordable housing. This year, we have identified 1,094 families who need a meal, and there are more on the waiting list.

“You don't have to make a huge donation to make a difference,” says Shannon Murphy, a coordinator for Thanksgiving for 1000. “A $50 gift can help put a Thanksgiving meal on a family's table.”

Each meal bag feeds a family of four to six and includes a $20 grocery gift card so families can choose their own protein. A $50 gift feeds one family; $500 feeds 10. All money raised goes directly to families in need.

“We’re also looking for local businesses who would like to partner with us,” Murphy said. “If your company is looking for a tangible way to give back locally this Thanksgiving, this is a great opportunity.”

H-E-B has given $5,000, and Rally Credit Union and Members First Credit Union have each given $500. A $500 sponsorship feeds 10 families and includes recognition on Asbury's Facebook page and in its outreach.

Moody High School, Club Estates Elementary and all Flour Bluff ISD schools are hosting food drives, along with KBNJ 91.7 FM, CHRISTUS Spohn and Rising Tide Resale Shop.
