Kleberg County Receives State Grant for Historic Courthouse Restoration

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - Kleberg County Judge Rudy Madrid announced Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, that Kleberg County has been awarded a significant grant from the Texas Historical Commission to restore the historic Kleberg County Courthouse.

The funding was awarded through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP), the state's nationally recognized, award-winning grant program that provides financial assistance to counties for the preservation and restoration of historic courthouses.

As part of the restoration project, Madrid said county operations will temporarily relocate to the former Perez Elementary School building while construction is underway. The move is intended to allow courthouse services to continue uninterrupted during the renovation.

The grant marks another investment in the preservation of the courthouse, which has benefited from state assistance in the past. In 2016, Kleberg County received a grant of more than $430,000 through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program to address critical repairs to the aging courthouse.

The upcoming restoration is expected to preserve the historic landmark while improving its long-term functionality for county government and the public.

Additional details, including the total amount of the 2026 grant, the project timeline, and the anticipated relocation schedule for county offices, are expected to be released as the project moves forward.
