Make an Emergency Plan
Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plans. Include the office, kids’ day care, and anywhere else you frequent in your hurricane plans. Ensure your business has a continuity plan to continue operating when disaster strikes.
Key Steps for Hurricane Preparedness:
1. Build a Disaster Kit:
Food and Water: Store enough non-perishable food and water to last at least 3 days.
First-Aid Kit: Include medications, bandages, and other necessary supplies.
Important Documents: Keep copies of essential documents in a waterproof container.
Other Essentials: Flashlights, batteries, a radio, and sanitation supplies are also crucial.
Consider: Pet supplies, baby supplies, and cash.
2. Secure Your Home:
Secure Windows and Doors: Use hurricane shutters or pre-cut plywood to protect windows.
Reinforce Doors: Brace internal doors and reinforce garage doors.
Trim Trees: Remove or trim trees that could fall on your home during strong winds.
Clean Drains: Ensure drains, gutters, and downspouts are free of debris to prevent flooding.
Bring in Outdoor Items: Secure or bring in lawn furniture, trash cans, and other items that could be damaged by wind.
3. Develop an Evacuation Plan:
Learn Evacuation Routes: Know your community's evacuation routes and how to sign up for local alerts.
Identify a Safe Place: Have a plan for where to go if you need to evacuate, whether to a shelter or the home of a friend or family member.
Practice Evacuation: Practice your evacuation plan with your household and pets.
4. Stay Informed:
Monitor Weather Reports: Keep up-to-date on weather forecasts and official warnings.
Heed Evacuation Orders: If authorities advise or order you to evacuate, leave immediately.
