Hurricane Rafael

The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi and Nueces Electric Cooperative

COASTAL BEND, TEXAS (News Release) - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Corpus Christi and Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC) are closely monitoring Hurricane Rafael as it continues to shift south and west across the Gulf of Mexico.

Rafael has reached the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, just north of Cuba as a category 2 hurricane. The system is forecast to meander over the south-central Gulf of Mexico this weekend and early next week.

While current forecasts predict that Rafael will weaken as it moves toward the southwest Gulf, NEC is urging the community to remain vigilant and take basic safety precautions as needed:

Stay Informed: Keep up with local news and weather reports for the latest updates on Hurricane Rafael.

  • Prepare for Power Outages: Have an emergency kit ready, including flashlights, batteries, water, and non-perishable food.

  • Stay Safe: Avoid driving through flooded areas and take precautions in heavy winds.

Dangerous marine conditions, high risk of rip currents and prolonged coastal flooding can begin as early as this weekend. Residents and visitors to South Texas should continue to closely monitor and stay alert to any changes.

For more information, visit NWS at www.weather.gov/crp or NEC at their outage map and their Storm Center for up-to-date information and guides on Storm Preparedness.
