COASTAL BEND, TEXAS (News Release) - Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends November 30 each year, but don't wait until the last minute, now is the time to get prepared before a storm threatens our area.

Prepare your Family

Develop a plan and make arrangements for all family members and pets.

Know where to go

Citizens should prepare a plan well in advance of an evacuation.

Prepare Your Home & Boat

Learn how to protect your home from strong winds and water damage.

If you shelter in place:

• Always keep a safe distance from flooded and damaged areas.

• If your house floods and you’re still inside, climb higher to escape the flood waters. If the highest floor of your home becomes dangerous, get on the roof and call 911.

• To protect yourself from wind, stay in an interior room without windows. This is the safest place in a building.

If you're asked to evacuate:

• Follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not take shortcuts, as they may be blocked.

• Never drive through floodwaters. A car can be swept away with only a foot of water. There’s no way to know if the road itself has collapsed when hidden by water.

• Always pay attention to barriers and signage.

• Be alert for washed-out roads, bridges, and downed power lines.
