Historic Six Points Intersection Receives New Artistic Crosswalks

CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The City completed the installation of four artistic crosswalks at the Six Points Intersection.

In April 2021, City contractors began reconstruction of the Six Points Intersection to install new asphalt pavement and utility improvements. Roadway construction on the project was completed in November 2021.

To celebrate the history and character of the area, City Council approved the installation of artistic crosswalks in the area. To gain stakeholder input on the initiative, City Staff created an extensive communication and outreach plan to engage the surrounding businesses in the Six Points area. In addition, an online survey was conducted to allow these businesses to vote on nine design options for the artistic crosswalks.

The project was completed with the winning design. The blue and white color was selected to recognize the City’s bayfront, which is just below the bluff, while the unique pattern pays homage to the retro feel of the Six Points area. 

District 2 Councilmember Ben Molina has been a champion of the Six Points project.

“These crosswalks will enhance and highlight the historic character of the Six Points area and are another step forward in our revitalization efforts for our beautiful city,” Molina said.

Artistic crosswalks are commonplace in larger cities across the state of Texas and the United States. This first-of-its-kind project serves as the beginning of the City modernizing its policies to reflect its citizen’s desire for art, creativity, and individuality in the historic areas across the community. The City has also adopted a community art policy that will allow for and govern artistic crosswalks in the city. These guidelines establish procedures for community groups to get involved and take ownership of the infrastructure that is of great significance to them.
