Funding Approved for Future Pedestrian and Biking Projects

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - Corpus Christi City Council approved an advanced funding agreement (AFA) with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to improve pedestrian and biking safety at various locations throughout the City.

The AFA is a crucial step in advertising and awarding bids for construction. The improvements, which will take place at four locations throughout the City, will include the following:

  • District 1: 5-ft sidewalks along Leopard Street from Villa Drive to Oak Park Avenue and Oak Park Avenue from Up River Road to Leopard Street, as well as curb ramps, pedestrian islands, signs, crosswalks, and a signal at the intersection of Oak Park and Leopard Street to improve the ability to walk and bike to school.

  • District 2: Pedestrian and bicycle crossing at Ocean Drive near Oleandar Park, which includes a signalized midblock crossing, curb ramps, signage, and crosswalk pavement markings,

  • District 3: A 10-ft sidewalk/multi-use path to extend the existing sidewalk/multi-use path, adjacent to the Mary Carroll Ditch, to sidewalks on Carroll Lane

  • District 4: A 5-foot sidewalk along Encantada Avenue from Gypsy Street to Park Road 22, complete with curb ramps, signage, and pavement markings.

“Investing in pedestrian and biking safety is investing in the well-being of our community,” Mayor Paulette Guajardo said. “These improvements will make it easier and safer for families, students, and residents across our city to walk, bike, and connect with one another.”

The estimated construction costs are just under $3.7 million, which will be shared between the federal government and the City. The City can receive up to 80% reimbursement from the federal government for these projects.
