Fireworks Cause Grass Fire on Highway 361

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – (News Release) The grass fire on highway 361 has been successfully contained by the City of Corpus Christi Fire Department. 

Safety remains a top priority, so firefighters will remain in the area to prevent any reigniting of fire.

All lanes on highway 361 are now open for motorists to use. Please drive carefully and stay vigilant while traveling on the highway.

The cause of the fire was due to the use of fireworks.

The Corpus Christi Fire Department would like to remind the community that discharging fireworks within the city limits, including the beach area, is prohibited.

Below are some safety tips to follow if using fireworks outside city limits:

  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

  • Older children should use them only under adult supervision.

  • Never light them indoors.

  • Use them away from people, houses, and flammable material.

  • Only light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

  • Do not ignite devices in a container.

  • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

  • Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.

  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
