The Corpus Christi Firefighters’ C.A.R.E. Foundation, Cancer Awareness Relief Effort, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports Corpus Christi firefighters and their families battling cancer. The organization has also assisted other groups focused on cancer education and prevention.

According to the International Association of Fire Fighters, cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters, who face higher exposure to carcinogens than the general population.

Organizers of Barefoot Mardi Gras said the donation aims to support the foundation’s mission of “supporting those who save lives” while raising awareness about cancer risks in the fire service.
